Five CDs That I Only Bought To Look Cool
by Xtopher

1. Sigur Ros ( )
I bought this the day it was released, as I like to do with new, hip, releases from Iceland. I listened to the beginning of track number three while flossing once, haven't heard a lick of it since. I leave the CD lying around in well-trafficked areas of my apartment so it's easy for a guest to find and remark on how cool I am for owning it.

2. Sonny Rollins "Saxophone Colossus"
This CD is probably very good, but Laura Branigan and Club Noveau have been dominating the tray in my CD player as of late. I'm sure Sonny Rollins really knows how to blow that horn of his, but I really have to be in the right mood for listening to any kind of jazz music, horn-blowing or otherwise.

I do admire jazz music a lot, as I appreciate its complexities and the way it makes shooting horse seem like a viable life plan. But you can't work out at the Y to the stuff. There's nothing worse than feeling tired and unmotivated on the elliptical trainer and having some avant-garde piece by Cecil Taylor drone on and on in your headphones.

3. Kronos Quartet "Nuevo"
Classical music can either be really cool or just plain dorky. I really like when classical musicians cover rock songs and stuff, because it's so dorky it's cool. Kronos Quartet does this every so often. I bought a bootleg of theirs like fifteen years ago which had a cover of "We're Not Gonna’ Take It" by Twisted Sister. I never listened to that CD either.

4. Blackalicious "Blazing Arrow"
I haven’t bought "Blazing Arrow" yet, but I plan to given that it's on a lot of very hip and cool critics' best of the year lists. Figured there was no harm in getting a head start, so I've included it on my own.

5. Ryan Adams "Demolition"
I bought this one because I figured since I already had Ryan Adams' first two solo discs I might as well get the third. I bought "Heartbreaker" a couple years ago after I heard Adams was going out with Winona Ryder. Then I bought "Gold" last year when I heard that he was going out with Winona Ryder again. Ages ago I bought Soul Asylum's Chanukah album when I heard that their front man Dave Pirner was going out with Winona Ryder, and I officially joined Beck's fan club when I learned that he was going out with Winona Ryder. Come to think of it, the very reason I have all those Japanese imports of the Foo Fighters is because I read that Dave Grohl was going out with Winona Ryder. I tried to produce my own CD when I was going out with Winona Ryder, but I don't really play any instruments so it didn't really go anywhere. The little I've heard of "Demolition" leads me only to conclude one thing: Ryan Adams needs to go out with Winona Ryder again.
